ABOUT

Zuhal Sultan

Music for a change

Zuhal Sultan

I've heard so much positive feedback from lots of people explaining how listening to live music have given them big hopes for a better future, therefore their mindset started changing and that's exactly what we really need; bad news, explosions, dead people, etc. is all that we hear and see in the media here in Iraq.

My campaign

I’m campaigning to set up the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq.  I have found lots of young people who want to get involved, but I need help finding web-tutors for each of my orchestra members, as we don’t have enough music teachers in Iraq.  I want to put on annual summer schools where the orchestra gets to rehearse and then we hope to tour around our country and abroad.

Campaign highlights

- Putting on my recital at the Wigmore Hall
- Being interviewed on Front Row and for the World Service
- Being interviewed by The Times
- Getting so much positive feedback from YOU

How you can help

- Contact me if you’d like to web-tutor any of the orchestra members
- Contact me if you think you can help me set up a charity
- Send me your comments and words of support

Just back from your Wigmore Hall performance. I feel elated and full of hope to see that destruction and war did not manage to destroy everything after all as long as Art continues and thrives. Keep me on your mailing list for any future performances. Thank you for bringing joy and hope. Lily Al-Tai

Thank you very much for the invitation and I would love to join but unfortunately I will not be in the UK on the 2nd of April. Can I promote for this event to my friends and those who might be interested to attend? I am aware of Zuhal's talent and I also believe she is a wonderful woman with a bright future ahead .... I just like to wish her the best of luck and I am very sad I will not be able to attend ... Kind regards. Khulud

Here's a youtube file of Allegra conducting the Unity Youth Orchestra from a summer course last year. This is the kind of excellent work we have to build the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq from. You can see Zuhal playing piano. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQXwmiaHMaY&feature=related Keep the support coming in! Paul MacAlindin

Hey Zuhal I am so proud of you. It is a great project, and we are all aware of the fact that the arts is an amazing tool we can use to create social change.

Gillion Bosman, 23 December 2008 14:20

After reading about Zuhal's campaign and discussing it with Paul Macalinden last week, I have just met Zuhal in Baghdad. A remarkable young woman leading a remarkable campaign. I hope the British Council can assist her and the other young musicians in making their dream a reality. It's no more than they deserve.

Tony Reilly, 13 December 2008 15:35

What a fantastic sounding project, if young peoples minds can be opened up by and through creative opportunities what a difference it could make to Iraq and the young people now and in the future. If the mindset of young people can be shifted now then it can only set them in good stead to lead a more harmonised culture going forward. Best of luck.

Cordelia Grant, 11 December 2008 15:21
