Down with Tuition Fees

James Greenhalgh Staffordshire

'University fees are unfair. Doesn't everyone deserve a free education?'

My campaign

For young people, especially students from a working-middle class background, university fees are a massive deterrent to higher education. Young people shouldn’t have to start their careers already owing money or be put off going to university by the fees. In my opinion, university education should be free for all students in the UK regardless of wealth, social class or personal circumstances; in fact, regardless of anything…

My campaign highlights

- Getting Naomi from Skins to support my campaign and attend a protest

- Meeting David Lammy, the government's Minister for Higher Education

- Pound coin stunt outside parliament, sending pound-sign shaped bubbles over the Houses of Parliament for my photo-call

- Delivering a speech at my event in the House of Commons on Aprils Fools Day

- Delivering my report to the Prime Minister at Downing Street

- Organising a national Anti-Fees protest in Central London

This is a great idea as i had to drop out of uni as i couldnt afford the tution fees good luck to you.

David Pattison, 13 October 2009 10:55

Anyone read the latest Harry Phibbs article on top-up fees ? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-1215059/HARRY-PHIBBS-Students-responsibility-education-expect-state-pay.html As noted he's got both the annual cost of removing tuition fees wrong. He claims £12 bn - its actually somewhat over £2 bn and the amount of extra salary a graduate makes over a lifetime. He claims £400k - its actualy £160 k. too much to hope for a retraction I suppose.

i think students SHOULD PAY TUITION FEES, they don't pay tax, educations free until uni, so why not invest a little money in your own education and not make it others responsablity,if u get a good job out of uni then payin back for the investment u made in yourself is not a bad thing, most students would end up failing uni if they knew it was free,KEEP FEES FOR STUDENTS IF THEY DON@T WANT TO INVEST MONEY AND TIME IN THERE SELVES GET A JOB ....good luck anyway ,reiss

Hey James, Saw your campaign on Channel 4. It was wicked. Keep up the good work. I wanted to start my own charity (campaign) on getting youths that left school or college back into eductaion, univeristy, traning or work. I wanted your help on ideas and perhaps starting it up. Its very closely related to your campaign. Could you help? AC

Hi James, I agree with you that everyone should be entitle to higher education regardless of there socio-economic status but I've got a few points that have been overlooked in this debate. You probably already know a lot of this but I need to work throught the logic of it all thoroughly. The problem is that the real cost of higher education is not being met at the moment and neither students nor the government want to pay for it. I believe that higher education should only be paid for by the government where there is economic benefic for society as a whole and it is also personally my belief that many of the new higher education courses now, do not do this. Therefore in a way I think that tuition fees are a good idea because your making an economic incentive for ppl to only do a degree if it's worth it. However, the problem with this is that it puts pressure on the student and students had enough debt with simple living costs before top-up fees. But having said that even with the top-up fees the real cost of the best university courses is not being met and it is (probably rightly) claimed that standards are slipping compared to degrees in other countries. I propose that we have a tiered government funding system whereby the best courses get the most funding and the most intelligent students go to university for free. There should less funding to courses for which it is of no economic benefit to fund the same amount for. Obviously, there are some courses that you MIGHT argue should be exempt from this such as creative courses like Drama and music which produce things that are of great value to society but which are not necessarily economically credited for their true worth, in these cases it makes sense to fund them. When more and more ppl are going to university you need to ask the vital question of "WHY?". When about 5-7% it was obvious as they were the most intelligent ppl and should therefore be given a chance to study further. For certain jobs you must learn more on-the-job then if you were to do a university degree on more often than not something totally irrelevant. Secondly, I believe that university students can get MORE out of there degree if we made it more competitive i.e. leaning towards the french system. I go to a good university and as far as I can see (in the first two years at least) ppl don't work very hard at all and don't get out of it what they could. At the end of the day no-one neither the government nor students can just bang on about what they want, with out thinking about the real problems.

Benjamin Wang, 25 May 2009 22:29

Tuition fees are a joke! Lets face it the majority of university students are going to be the big earners, giving the highest proportion of their salary to the government to spend on pointless projects that benefit no one. By discouraging people from higher education they are, as they should think, loosing revenue. I say stop pointless government schemes, for example the government wasting 3.5 million pounds of taxpayers money on a stupid advertising plan "pledge" pointing out the obvious. Without the government throwing money away and MPs claiming on several houses tuition fees could be reduced to a minimal amount.

I'm happy to see there's a voice about this issue thats making a real dent. I'm just about to graduate this week with £23,000 debt, joy! Ironically i got free education at a private school and i was on a bursary as i have a disabeled parent. So life hasn't been a bed of roses. But now i'm finding not only are we laidend with this debt but now there aren't any jobs anyway! Personally, the only solution at the moment is to move country. Keep up the excellent work, i'm hoping you do so well that everyone who has even been to uni can scrap their repayments!

Hi James,I watched channel 4 and saw your campaign- down with tuition fees.....I think its a fantastic campaign, that is, or will affect millions of students. I am a upcoming journalist (print-based) and me and my 'co-journalists' publish a Uni magazine called 'UNI'D IT!' for many Universities. I was wondering if you would like to have an interview with me, so that you can not only be featured in the magazine but also raise the awareness to students who have not yet heard of the campaign. If your interested, please add me on facebook or email me on abigailadetitun@hotmail.co.uk

I'm going to uni next year and luckily i have the money to pay for it, thanks to my fantastic family, and little bit of my own hard graft. However a lot of my friends were not that lucky and are struggling with fees or purely cant go when they deserve to. This campaign is brilliant and i back you every step of the way. Good Luck!
