You smoke - I choke

Zander Percival Hertfordshire

'If you put a kid in the car with second hand cigarette smoke, you are basically killing them.'

My campaign

I want to have smoking banned in cars that carry children under the age of 16. Some countries already ban smoking in cars but in the U.K. we don’t. It’s unfair to children who have no voice or choice about inhaling second-hand smoke.

My Campaign highlights

- Being featured in the Battlefront TV series on Tuesday 2nd December at 11.30am

- Working with branding agency, Dave, on a logo and animation for my campaign

- Putting on a publicity stunt involving a car, a smoke machine and a plastic doll

- Getting a meeting with my local MP, Mike Penning to talk about my campaign

- Meeting mentor, Alex Ross and stunt agency, Cunning

How can you help?

- Put up my poster in your school

- Pass on my viral animation to your friends and family – especially if they smoke!

- Show your support by putting a comment on my Battlefront or Bebo page

- Join me on my next stunt – coming up soon!

i think your campaign is an extremely good issue. i'm a year 10 citizenship student. i've already done a cititzenship coursework on smoking which was 'should smoking and drugs be legalised'. the results we got was that it shouldn't be legalised and stay banned. i think people who inhale the second-hand smoke become more endangered by lung disease than people who acutuallly smoke and that it should be banned becuse it'll increase the death rate of young people beacuse they'll die of lung disease. good luck with your campaign and i hope that it becomes successful.

"MUMMY!!! MUMMY!!! Make them all shut up and do what I want,Mummy!!!! I don't like people smoking and I don't want people smoking, so you've all got to do what I say!!!!!"

Surely This Is On The Same Lines As Stopping Smoking In My Own House Of Back Garden, Im For Public Vicheles With The Ban, But With My Car I Think Having The Right Too Smoke In It And Whether I Act On That Right Belongs To Myself. And How Is Banning Smoking In A Car With A Under 16 Child Differant To Banning Them Smoking In There Own House, Which Is Probably Worse As I Know I Smoke More In My House Than My Car, In The One Room. This Is Kind Of Going Beyond Controll Freak.

you smoke- I choke, then don't stand where I'm smoking.

smokey joe, 06 May 2010 17:00

omg give him/her a break their only trying to help you and put the message through your heads i mean why would you wanna smoke anyway and if you like smoking in a car with a child so their breathing the passasive smoking in well you deserve to die i hope you breath in too much smoke and choke if you aint bothered about blowing smoke into an inocent child face!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW PATHETIC

:P, 06 May 2010 16:04

well its not like people dont know the risks of smocking around children i mean as i smocker i cant watch tv or go online without somthing somwhere telling me to give up, even my own dahm ciggert packet. so i feel your campain is silly as you can change laws but not people. if someone is inconsiderate enogth to smoke in a car around a child with no open window then that them. plus your only contributing to the big ban 'smocking all togther' idear witch i really hate becuse once again free will counts for nothing

Rocky , 06 May 2010 00:22

what right do you have to tell me what to do. I don't like cars, does that mean that private cars should be abolished

Smokey McSmoke, 05 May 2010 19:30

I think this is a very good idea although you will get a lot of opposition concerning the ability to not smoke in your own property. I would definatly back this, i really thinks its unfair for children to be exposed to potentially life threatening secondhand smoke. Well done.

Casey Wood, 03 May 2010 15:19

im sorry but stopping people smoking in a vehicle that they own? this is taking it too far, next it will be banned all together! maybe the children could walk it instead and that would solve childhood obesity AND passive smoking! ;)

Lily, 27 April 2010 22:53

I find this a joke that you are trying to stop poeple smoking in ther own car!

Richard Brown, 26 April 2010 07:51

unfortunetly most parents these days could not care less about something like that, considering we are a population being overrun by teenagers who really should never procreate to begin with, so listen up kiddies, you dont like second hand smoke? thats the least of your problems, wait a couple years.

Dan Pennington, 26 April 2010 00:20

i think this is a good idea because my dad smokes in the car and i getsome dirty looks when i smell of smoke

Owen, 25 March 2010 18:04

I really love this idea! If only it could be adjusted to houses also! - I am nearly 6 months pregnant with my first child and I am going on 21 years of age. I have developed asthma through my pregnancy and also due to my partner and friends smoking in my house. I have now put my foot down and told them my house is a non-smoking zone as of the end of March 2010. They all agree with this, which is nice (and tough if they don't) as they all care very much for me and my baby! - I have also told my partner that our car will be a smoke free zone when the Baby is here and he is fine with that! It wont even be a case of smoking with the windows open. We are very adamant that our child will be in a smoke free environment for as long as possible! And also myself, to hopefully rid this asthma and become healthier! - So watching this documentary on Channel 4 at nearly 6am has really given me a boost to help with campaigns like this! Good Luck & Never give up!

What about children's rights? The UN Convention on the Right on the Child demonstrates that tobacco is a human rights issue - offical interpretation of the articles show this. Children have the right to be protected from passive smoking – unlike adults who can choose whether or not to be in a smoky environment, children have little choice. They are far less likely to be able to leave a smoke-filled room/car if they want to: babies cannot ask; some children may not feel confident about raising the subject; and others may not be allowed to leave even if they ask. There has been lots of research on the subject of secondhand smoke and children - exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) in childhood is associated with reduced lung function, middle ear disease, an increased risk of a range of respiratory symptoms and a higher incidence of respiratory tract infections. SHS exposure is also a cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Children are more vulnerable to to the effects of SHS than adults because of their smaller size, less developed immune systems and faster breathing rates. Research shows that SHS levels in cars can be 23 times greater than those in a house. Numerous other countries have passed legislation to ban smoking in cars when children are present - Australia (New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia), Canada (Nova Scotia, Yukon, Ontario, British Columbia), USA states and territories (Arkansas, Louisiana, California, Maine, Puerto Rico) and Cyprus. Smoking related illness have indeed been put as the cause of death on a death certificate - there are so many of them! I agree that alcohol can also cause harm to children but second hand smoke can too. Smoking costs society so much money and the tax on cigarettes does not cover it! Taxation amounts to £10 billion annually, however, the costs to society from smoking are much greater at £13.74 billion. These costs comprise not only the cost of treating smokers on the NHS, but also the loss in productivity from smoking habits and increased absenteeism, the cost of cleaning up cigarette butts, the cost of smoking related house fires and also the loss in economic output from the deaths of smokers and passive smokers. I think this is a great campaign, good luck with it! I think your campaign will become a reality - especially after the publication of the new tobacco control strategy.
