Bring Your Own Coffee Cup

Aimee Nathan London

‘400 billion cups of coffee are sold in the world a year. That's billions of cups that we’re wasting, that we’re throwing away.'

My Campaign

I’m campaigning to try to get people to bring their own mugs or thermos flasks to cafes when they want a take-away coffee. Disposable cups are non-recyclable and very bad for the environment. I want to get coffee companies to take responsibility too – by offering discounts if you bring your own mug. Plastic bags are now frowned upon by lots of people – let’s do the same for plastic coffee cups.

My Campaign Highlights

- Appearing in the Channel 4 TV series on Wednesday 3rd December

- Putting on a “bring your own mug” stunt with celebrity Jodie Marsh

- Meeting mentors: Mark Farmaner, Nik Done, Fredda Hurwitz and Mark Stephens, and Rene Jorgensen!

- Being interviewed by the Evening Standard, You magazine, and the Jewish Chronicle

- Attending an all day brainstorm with the Creative Orchestra agency

- Getting my first coffee shop on board the campaign!

How can you help?

- Take your own mug or thermos with you when you buy a coffee

- Ask coffee shops for a discount if you bring your own mug (some of them do offer this)

- Send me pics of you with your take-away mug

- Keep following for news on more stunts that YOU can attend

hi duane id love to be involved in an event in some way unless its already happened? what would it involve? aimee

aimee nathan, 15 April 2009 20:02

Hi Aimee I was wondering when the Brent X event is going to happen? Any more details? I am intrigued!

caroline , 15 April 2009 11:10

Hi Aimee, Well done to you! I've pasted your ad on my facebook page. If enough people go in and ask for a discounted coffee in their own cup, and when refused leave, they will soon take notice and have to do something about it. Then you'll have war over who gets the rites over the idea, and then you're laughing. If they try to screw you on a deal, they will end up screwing themselves because everyone will know about it, and the trade will leave. What student likes acrooked coffee shop?. I'm just going to find myself a pair of heat-resistant gloves.

Hi Aimee I was at the Battlefront event at Channel four where I saw all of you guys speak about your campaigns. Excellent :) I am involved in an event which will be happening soon in Kings Cross London where the theme is consumption. I know you have quite a few useful resources etc, around coffee cups which would be really helpful for an installation we are thinking of doing at the actual event. So it would be great of I could speak to you really soon about some ideas/links. Please contact me duane (at) wemakesense (dot) org asap for details. Thanks! Duane

Hey Aimee, it was greta to meet up and discuss over campaign tactics, i hope your journey is going well. I want some advice, what are the best re-usable coffee cups on the market that have lids so they don't get dirty in my backpack???

James Mummery, 02 March 2009 08:33

Hi Aimee, It's amazing to see someone your age making this great campaign. I manage a very busy coffee place in London (off Tottenham Court Rd). I really like your idea and i'm keen to take part in your campaign. I wouldn't mind desplaying posters and offer loyalty cards only to those who bring their own cups (the loyalty cart would give a free coffee for every 8 the customers buy). Please email me if i could help (a.sedolli@gmail.com). P.s we are not a chain. all the best

Hi Aimee! i just found out about your campaign from a friend of mine who told me about it and i have to say .. Its amazing! In Winchester (where i go to college) @ Starbucks,Nero's and Costa they use those paper cups and then they are thrown everywhere and it makes the town a look a mess! I support your campaign 100% and if you would like me to help promote your campaign here i would be happy to. Please let me know if this is ok or not? Thanks Becca :) xx (Email- xfoxyxrx91x@hotmail.co.uk)

Hi guys, In response to Michael's comment on the video, currently only Starbucks offer a financial incentive if you bring your own mugs of 25p, however this is very poorly advertised at the moment, which hopefully will change in the near future. Thank you so much Jamie for the link, its great that other people are taking the same approach as me and realise that coffee cup waste has got to stop! Keep in contact, Aimee x

Hi Amy-Jo Me again! Thank you so much for your comment - I am really keen to get more people involved in the campaign and am happy to build up a team which could involve you if you would like? I have emailed you so please check your email and get back to me to talk about how we can work together. If anyone else would like to get involved - while I am here ;) - please do not hesitate to contact me. Something tells me I may need help getting global coffee chains on board! x

Any support and exposure for the campaign is great, its not a campaign about me its about the cause so any way in which it can be spread is peerrffeeccttt :) x

Hey, I just wanted to say that I love your campaign! It's small steps like taking your own cup for drinks that add together to create a big difference in climate change and stopping litter etc. Coffee shops seem to be on the rise so this is deffiantly needed and its a little quirky and different. I liked the TV show you did and I love 'Da Koffee Kup Krew' video - that should be made into a TV advert! I also LOVED your idea of creating a massive coffee cup out of coffee cups, you could put facts about how much coffee cups damage the enviroment on it. I'm vice-chair of Romsey Youth Council (Romsey's a town in south England) and I'm very interested in enviromental and global issues. Every year our youth council holds a youth conference and this years is on Global issues. Two of our main topics at the event are Litter, Vandalism and recycling, and global warming so your campaign fits in nicely. I was wondering if I could bring your campaign up with the youth council and see if we can give it some publicity at the event - possibly by showing your campaign video or making your campaign part of a topic. Also I was wondering if we would possibly be able to try and campaign for people to take their own mugs to the coffee shops in our area. We have a busy costa coffee shop in the center of the town and some smaller coffee shops locally too. It would depend how the idea went at the conference and with the youth council but it would be great to create a local group to try and get our local stores involved with the campaign. I understand it's your campagn and everything I just think it would be great to expand it as far as possible so please let me know if that would be ok or not. Good luck with your campaign in 2009! Thanks, Amy-Jo amy_jo_davis@hotmail.co.uk

Amy-Jo Davis, 02 January 2009 16:27

i think what you're doing is wicked. im 17 from london, and seeing someone else my age thinking the same way and actually caring for our environment is amazing. good luck with everything :)

As a Starbucks barista from basingstoke, I have seen the amount of takeaway cups thrown away and i didnt really think much about it till watching the programme the other day. I know at Starbucks we give something like 25p of each drink if you bring your own mug. I strongly support your campaign because the waste is unbelievable so by doing this im going to make as many customers as i can aware of this, and try to persuade them to bring there own mugs!! Thank you for showing how much of a problem it is and i hope i can help = ] xxxx
